Yeah...I could give away half of my mealworm colony, and still have plenty to fish with.
A lot of worms, Mine are doing to well.
This is one of four trays . Need small refrigerator bad .
I tried for 3 years never had much luck. Ever-one said it was easy. Finally gave up
wheat bran , feed very little, no water . I just need to break reproduction cycle .
I use this guy's method, it's the simplest, and has worked flawlessly for the past 7 years.

I do the same but use wheat bran instead of oats and potatoes rather than carrots .(POTATOES ABOUT ONCE A MONTH ) . I now have 4 trays .
Eagle 1 You say you have 4 bins..Are they the stacked kind with 1 with screen bottom...Or do you just have 4 bins and hand separate as needed.. Or just let them do there thing in same bin
I separate some but for the most part I let them go . I find that The four will supply me just adding wheat bran .
Added wheat meal today . Need to go fishing ,Got 4 of these . Attachment 355444Attachment 355445
Wow, four containers of that many mealworms ? You definitely have more than me.So you just kept adding more and more containers?
yep, only problem is when they turn to beetles . I use nothing but wheat bran and an occasional banana peels . I don't bream fish enough to use this many . Any body in the area is welcome to a box if you pick up . (bring your own box) can use oat meal if you have no wheat bran .
Hey Eagle 1 we have a mutual friend from Tupelo. He stopped by yesterday and picked us up some meal worms.

My son and I are talking about starting a mealworm colony.
Easy to do . My biggest problem was moisture to begin with . After I stopped trying to water them it was easy . They live in what they eat and change boxes every 3 months or so and put in new food . When you get 50 bugs put them in a new box and start another .
how do you get the worms to start?

I started with 2000, so I could also fish with them too.
I was told to wet a paper towel , wring out as much as possible and spread across the top .By the time I realized there was mold in my trays the worms were dead . If using wheat bran for bedding they eat it . I have been told they will eat their own for moisture not sure . (Have found no partial worms ) I add a tray of 50 any time I need more . There are times I have thousands of bugs .
will try the potato/ carrots again . I normally feed a hundred or so to fatten up before fishing .
I keep everything in the same uncovered container.I add, two small folded in half hand towels. These hand towels seem to only attract the largest mealworms inside them.I would probably get mold too from the water mistings I give them, if it wasn't for fact that their bin is right next to the central a/c intake vent which is constantly pulling in air .
Moisture is a mealworm killer. As long as there is pleanty of bedding/food ( bran or oats ) a halved potato is adequate for moisture and my preferred method, but carrots are good also.If the worms begin giving off an ammonia odor, the bedding has become too saturated and needs be replaced.placing a couple cardboard egg cartons opened and upside down on top the bedding will give the worms and beetles a secure ,dark location( they love it ) plus it makes it easier to gather worms for fishing.
If you want to fatten them up give a bin some romaine lettuce a few days before. When I raised them I gave a lot of romaine to them and took 200 to a coffee can full in 6 months.
Just don't give it very often or the bedding will get wet and mold. I gave maybe 1 leaf a week. I am gonna try again soon and may use Chinese cabbage instead since it seems to keep forever. My main was always carrots, the really big juicing ones so I could cut big rounds that lasted a long time.
But to answer the question where to get them, I got mine from a local pet store.
