Two tarp crappie morning 7/11/19
What started off as an unsuccessful top water bass fishing trip quickly turned into a crappie fishing trip when I caught a keeper bass on a Bobby Garland Slab Slayer jig and then lost another bass on a jump right at the boat. Gary Fomby had one bass hit a top water plug and pull off, then no more bites on the bass.
I threw a topwater lure a couple of times and a swim bait some before turning back to the Slab Slayers. I didn’t make over 5 casts before the first of two tarps came aboard our ship. It was the 14.0” Black crappie that fell for the Lights Out color.
Changing colors as the daylight began getting brighter, Gary and I both got onto a school of crappie on a drop in the main river in 15-20 feet of water. We caught several fish there then moved to a bluff that gave up one keeper.
I finally moved over to one of my favorite offshore drops and we got into the crappie again. My first one on that spot was my biggest tarp to date, 15.5” and heavy. The fish thought it was a bass. Grin. Then we started catching 9.5” crappie until the thunder in the distance and the weather alert on the cell phone said the storm was 20 minutes away, so we high tailed it to the ramp with 10 keeper crappie caught, but I released the two tarp crappie. Gary has a nice mess of fish to clean in a little while.
13,500 cfs and 86.1 degree water at Skull Island ramp with cloudy rainy skies and thunder in the distance. We caught fish mostly on Minnow Mind’Rs and Slab Slayers and a couple of Baby Shads. Lights Out, Roly Poly, Lightning Bug, Silverfish, Blue Ice, Blue Ghost, Monkey Milk all caught fish. Color didn’t matter today.
