Sounds like age has hardened the rubber. I'd can it rather than risk having trouble down the road.
Replace it with a new one
ethanol in fuel causes deterioration
replace
Replace it with a factory bulb. Merc, Yamaha, Or OMC.
Stay away from them cheaper aftermarket bulbs. The go bad quick.
Yamaha and tohatsu have the best primer bulbs on the market in my opinion. The marpac brand blue primer bulbs are good quality too.
I just replaced mine with an attwood bulb yesterday. It claims to be greater volume per squeeze than original. It is much more firm than the one it replaced however . The one I replaced was a quicksilver and it had deteriorated inside.
I am hoping that hard squeeze gets better with time!
I replaced the complete fuel line with a new mercury line. I replaced the bulb on my jon boat with an Atwood bulb. The Merc bulb and the Atwood bulb are identical. ???????
I have had good luck with Atwood bulbs. I think the most important thing is to keep them out of the sun.
Just replace it, get a new bulb and some hose clamps, should be about $10 depending on where you shop.
