Trolling Cranks for Crappie - why keep the rod tips low?

Is it just a personal preference thing to keep the rod tips low? I kind of like them up a bit so I can really see the tips good as I sit back in my recliner in the shade.

I do let out a little bit of extra line, like 10 ft or so, to account for the higher rod tip. I also like the higher rod tip as it seems to make it a little easier for landing fish, you can see all the other lines really well.

I'm just curious if there is a specific reason that some guys like low rod tips.

Do you think the higher rod tips are costing me any fish?

Easier to land a fish between the rods. Easier to figure how much line is added to the amount you have out to figure depth the crank is running as you figure where line goes into the water and not from tip of the rod. For me, it’s also easier to watch all the tips at the same level dancing with the wiggle of the crankbait as there are times when the tip will quit dancing if it has a dink crappie on it or weeds/trash. I keep the rod tips as close to water as possible.

I started high but as the years went by made them lower for the same reasons above. Also, for me, the higher lines caught wind and seemed to cause me more tangles. However, your mileage may vary. Try running one bank high and the other side low to see which does better for you. Excellent question buddy.

Art, like your rod holder set up. Tell me about it as I have a Lund with a track system and am looking to add some rod holders. What bracket are you using [brand/model] to attach to your track.

I made my track brackets. Very easy and cheap to do. I make my own track brackets and bolts, and then add the Driftmaster bases to them. I've even made track brackets for my depthfinder/RAM mount, and made the bracket and boxes for my radio and speakers....no welding required, just a sawsall, drill, and some drill bits. I sent you a message with more info. I can send some pictures sometime if you'd like.

I'm going to try that. I picked up a couple of the 0 degree Driftmaster rod holders to try as a test. I will give it a try this weekend. Thanks for the suggestion!
