Does anyone make a true 3/32oz jighead? I mean one that weighs 2.7 grams with the hook. I bought a scale and started weighing my jigs. Found that most of them weigh more than what they should. Some way over! Found lots of 1/32 that were 1/24 or heavier. All of my 1/48 were really 1/24 on the nose. Just trying to make a depth chart for my set up for long lining. I want to make it as close to perfect as I possibly can. Changed line to 4# and want to know exactly where my jigs are running.
This is very common with pouring lead jigs. There are many variables to consider such as metal being used, alloys in that metal, temperature changes between mold and molten product. With small products like our jigs it is very difficult to achieve a perfect weight much less reproduce it every time. My guess is that if a person had ten different say 1/16 oz molds no two would be exactly the same.
I have a mold that pours a 0.10 with a 1/0 x-short shank hook. I'd have to pour a couple to double check, but it was really close.
You need to fill in the variables before you go hunting. Do you want no collar,tying collar,barded collar, or a wire insert in a plain round head? NO HEADS CAN BE POURED THAT WEIGH EXACTLY THE SAME EVERY TIME. IT JUST AINT HAPPENING!!!! There is to many games at play here. Lead weights different with every pour cause you have no idea the make up of the lead. You can be close but the variables are still there. Then hook weight is not constant either. The milling of the mold has to be taken in as well. The pouring process,looks good on the outside but maybe hollow on the inside. ITS ENDLESS!!!! Just buy the size you like,from the guy or gal you like, and go fishing...those scales will drive you to madness....lol...
I have some from certain makers and they all weigh pretty much the same, within .05 which I can live with. It's the 1/48th jigs I have that really weigh 1/24 is the problem. Or 1/16 that weigh 1.3 instead of 1.8. Eagle Claw makes some nice ones! Pro-V Bend. They say 1.9 on the box and weigh VERY close. The problem is finding them! I just want ones that are close to what they should be, not a half gram short or over.
Gabepeeps, wire used in hooks has the same issues as lead. Metal has many foreign materials in their makeup, its just part of it my friend,:fish
