The bigger the reel's spool the better .... "bigger" as in wider or longer. That seems to be the general consensus.
I've used reels from UL size up to 2000 series size, and found them all to be "adequate" for the 5' to 6'6" fast action rods they were on. I have used 7'-8' slow-moderate action rods, but found that they tend to "sling" the jig more so than "shoot" the jig, and didn't "skip" the jig as well. The parabolic bend of slow-med action rods doesn't seem to load up as much as a fast/very fast action tip rod, so it doesn't put as much speed on the jig. That's been my experience, anyway.
