I've been using an old life jacket that will work but I'm wanting to upgrade to a new PFD for the kayak. What's everyone's opinion on this? Sort of looking at the NRS Chinook but open to suggestions. Thanks

ONYX KAYAK FISHING PFD.WALMART.
Depends on your seat. Low back seat "requires" a high back pfd, tall/high seat back, then regular back pfd works well. NRS are good, as are Astral, Extrasport, Stholquist, MTI, and several others. You want a kayak specific for the arm movement during paddling and fishing and one that does not riding up. I like minimal pockets, too many and they get in the way. If you go with inflatable, make sure it is hydrostatic, not dissolvable pill. I prefer a foam pfd in all but the hottest weather, as I am more like to slip/trip/fall while along the shoreline and the foam protects my ribs.
i wear an NRS in the fall and winter and an Onyx inflatable in the spring and summer
The best one is the one that you'll wear all the time.....
I don't have a Yak or a Kayak but I have a Mustang inflatable and wear it almost all the time. There are times when it's just too hot to wear even the inflatable PFD.
Well ended up buying a NRS Chinook. My cousin told me of place that was having sale I couldn’t pass up. So far I like it.
I like it. In summer I’ve been wearing an inflatable pfd I bought from Bass Pro when they had them on sale. It is cooler than the full pfd. I wear the Chinook in winter now. The Chinook is in my kayak at all times too.
I wear my chinook year round. After a couple trips you don’t even realize you have it on.

I have probably the same inflatable.
I’m don’t have the confidence in it that I would with a regular PFD .
And with the inflatable , the air canister and device is on the right side , right in way of my rod hand . I’m always bumping the works and afraid I’m going to snag that hook that inflates the PFD .
Also with the kayak PFD , if I take it off while in the boat , I’m still legal. But, If I take the inflatable off , while on the water , I can be ticketed for not having a PFD . Crazy law .
