It can be done in just about any depth of water. I have caught them vertical jigging in less than 2 feet. The way NIMROD does it works better in water 12 feet or less due to his method of swinging the fish into the boat. Very deep and you have to use the reel to assist. You can also grab the line below the first guide to pull some line and assist.
I use the trolling motor to position the boat which is how I have seen NIMROD fishing, though he is obviously far more effective at it.
I have watched him from the deck of my boat set the hook and swing em in in one fluid motion. I have adopted this method also and have complete faith in it effectiveness. If I have left anything out or am incorrect I imagine NIMROD will be along and clear it up.
