Santee Quickie

After spending Friday and Saturday in Florida hanging out with the golf pros at TPC Sawgrass during the Players Championship we arrived back home around 11:00 on Sunday morning. After unpacking, my wife wanted to just relax and take it easy on Mother’s Day. She gave me the green light to go fish if I desired to do so. Not wanting to waste a vacation day, off I went. Pleasure boat traffic was horrendous, but I fought though the never ending boat wakes to fish brush and logs to net a nice limit of crappie. Both black and whites were in the mix. Fish were scattered in area, and in the water column. All fish were caught on jigs in a vertical presentation. Orange/Chartreuse was best color.

You are correct, whites are still carrying eggs. Still catching a few blacks that are egg laden too.

Speaking of fish eggs, all the Shellcrackers we caught at Santee had spawned out.
Friend caught some last week on Murray and they were full of eggs.
Guess it varies by several weeks from lake to lake. I could understand if the lakes were in different states, but these are within 60 miles.
Tim, do Whites typicalky spawn later than blacks?
PS. Did you see that the short putt Duffner missed on the last hole cost him $700,000?

Santee is a shallow, open water lake. It has mostly black, tannic waters. These two conditions just warm faster then the upland reservoirs and allow the fish to spawn sooner, and more often. White crappie typically spawn one month behind the blacks. There is a three month window for both species. Spawning blacks can be caught from mid February through mid May. Spawning whites from mid March through mid June. Of coarse weather patterns and conditions can vary these time frames a couple weeks each way. I saw that putt on TV, and yes, I felt his pain.
