Yamaha motor calls for NGK plug with gap .035-.039 . Couldn't get those plugs locally, bought a Champion substitute that shows a gap of .044 in the spark plug manual at Wal-Mart. Which gap should I use?

1 mm / .040 on nearly all of 2 stroke yamaha.
NGK is by far the preferred plug.
Do yourself a favor, take them back and go to auto parts store and get right plugs. Like Sliderman said NGK is the preferred plug and that's what motor likes best.
