Any ideas on how to catch shad other than a cast net? I saw a nice herd of them last weekend, they were swarming in a shallow weed bed,but them buggers wouldn't bite on a thing. They were about 8" long,I would like to try them as cut bait for catfish.

Don't ask me, the only thing I seem to able to catch lately is a COLD! :Rofl
You can snag them with a large treble hook fairly easy if it's legal in your area

They hit minnows just fine when you are on good crappie, one fish short of your limit and down to your last minno :fishw
Maybe try a long handle dip net if you are real quick but a small cast net is still your best bet.:dono
The smaller the better. I have a 6' net, it's a foot or two too much.
So I'm gathering from the responses, shad don't readily take bait offered on a hook,if at all ?
There is a rig called a Sibiki rig that I use to cast for them in running water. I get them from BPS. They have very small green plastic jigs on them. I tie a topwater lure with the hooks removed from the topwater to the end of the line so the rig doesn't sink. Good luck.
