I have not used the lowrance elite 5 hdi but I do have a helix 5 SI. I am sure the helix 5 di has most of the same features without the side scan. I use mine on a kayak and really like the single button to mark a location. Also if you have a SD card the single button will also start a screen capture if you would like to go back and review it.
I have also had better luck with hummingbird support over Lowrance support. Just one persons opinion.

This is something that I have learned and unless you have the eyes of an eagle I would just save my money and go to at least a 7" screen unit. This is just two cents worth.
I used to buy and use top of the line lowrance and hummingbird both for years. Same for bass boats. New and upgraded for years. Now, I fish out of a skinny water flat bottom decked out that I customized G3 1648 tin boat and regressed to 5" HDI lowrance's, one to run by and one up front. Are planning on watching the screen? Or going fishing and catching fish. I do both and 5" works fine for me. It's what ever floats your boat! :ThumbsUp
the hdi processor is slower . other than that it is a good low end unit .Had a helix on my other boat but it was the side scan .
There are two HELIX 5 DI models (in both gen1 and the new G2) ...
*HELIX 5 DI (no GPS/mapping)
*HELIX 5 DI GPS (GPS/mapping)
Make sure to confirm your need at decision time (3rd party advertisers use vague descriptions sometimes) ...

I like hummers myself for ease of operation ...
but the lowrance units seem to have better images
I run a hummer myself because I can turn it on and not have to play with it
I like it simple and am not there to look at a graph for more than a glance ...
