How many of you use 1/8oz as well as smaller size jigheads?
A couple of days ago I decided to go up in jighead size because the wind was nearly 20mph. Normally I use 1/32 and 1/16 oz. for a slow, shallow retrieve crappies and other panfish cannot refuse but I found that when fishing water deeper than 4' in a wind, that heavier is better. The retrieve rate can still be slow and yet even smaller 9" crappie will still bite. I even went to using larger grubs and still caught fish. Of course, windy day fishing is a much different animal than fishing pads on a calm day and line watching and feel are crucial for strike detection when the line is bowed by the wind.
Another tip I found useful was to cut a strip out of a curl tail, creating a thin straight tail. It worked as well as the curl tail and allowed for a faster rate of retrieve.
