Use em all the time trolling crank baits. Get the ones that have tattletale flags with them to let you know when you get bit.

speck got me started on the flag kind, I use them and they work real well.
Get offshore boards they are the best. Speck is right get tattletale flags, smaller fish wont hardly pull boards back. I mainly use them in green bay and lake Michigan I usually run 4-6 boards at a time, can get hectic but u can cover a lot of water. As far as trolling on Truman I prefer crawler harnesses, w/cranks u get more other fish which I don't want whatever u use good luck and go slow 1.4MPH for walleye
So how do the flags work?? do they reset themselves after the release is tripped?? Thanks for the info.
They are on a spring. When a fish gets on, the flag drops. Reel in, take the planer off the line, then reel in the fish. Flag pops back up automatically. Make sure to use a medium heavy rod with planers.
It's easiest to go with someone who has some and see how they do it. Sounds difficult but once you use them, they are pretty easy.
I know a fella that does it on Lake Jacomo with alot of success.
Hmmmm. now I'm confused, I thought the planer stayed out all the time and when the fish hit there was release on the planer that lets go of the string, unless the fish is not big enough to trip the release. What I read, this guy also used shower curtain ring clips and rubber bands, he would put the lure and line through the rubber band and clip the curtain ring to the rubber band and to the cord the planer is hooked to your boat with and the ring would go out to the planer, then the rubber band would break when a fish was on the line.
I'm sure there are several different ways to use planer boards, it's seems like a fun way to fish. :biggrin Just trying to get my mind wrapped around on how this stuff works.
Thanks for the info Speck, if I do decide to try this I'm going to have to get some heavy rods and maybe some reels with line counters.
