The second tournament of the season was back on West Point. Great weather let the anglers fish anywhere they wanted without worrying about wind, rain, and cold. Water temps were not friendly and dropped on an average of almost 5 degrees over most of the lake and river from temps seen less than a week earlier. Of course that changed a lot of the plans for most of the anglers fishing the prior weeks for the tournament. 53 degrees is just enough to tease a few big females up shallow enough to keep the anglers trying to figure out how shallow or deep the females and large males would move. 17 teams entered the tournament weighing in 76 crappie that averaged 1.16 lbs. The average Big Fish weighed 1.91 lbs. Now that the lake is close to full pool again, maybe it will stay so those big fish can spawn and keep that lake a crappie destination for years to come.
Congrats to T. Jones / D. Brown for working it all out to find the largest 7 crappie on tournament day. They said they had to work hard to get the few bites they got. They longline trolled a mix of plastics and some plastic/marabou jigs with minnows. Browns and other dark colors were best. Depths ranged from 8 - 18 feet of water with good fish coming from all up and down in the water column. They fished a major creek on the South end of the lake. They had a total of 10.45 lbs with a big fish of 1.78 lbs.
2nd place goes to E. Jones / B. Gray who had 7 crappie weighing 9.98 lbs with a big fish of 1.59 lbs. 3rd place was P. Johnson / G. Hanson with 9.92 lbs. and a 2.00 lbs big fish. 4th place was D. Grantham / J. Manning with 9.62 lbs. 5th place was S. Bohannon / W. Bohannon who weighed in 8.72 lbs. Big Fish of 2.10 lbs was weighed in by D. O'Neal / S. McRae. Top Youth team was M. Blount / B. Gazaway.
