What light do you have? What lakes are you planning on fishing?
Really, there's not much to the light thing in and of itself. Pick a spot, drop anchor, drop light.
Or, drop light and slow troll til you hit on a school and then drop anchor. This worked well for us on Bartlett a few weeks back.
You can always do Pleasant and try for some stripers too. That's a lot of fun.
Anyway, location has a lot to do with it as well as night conditions. It's not usually a great time to gather plankton and shad when competing with a bright (full) moon. If it is overcast then that can help but please be careful in the monsoon season. Storms whip up quick out here.
And if you have no shad or other bait fish around your light within an hour or so, don't be afraid of picking up anchor and moving. As mentioned above, very slow trolling with your lights out worked for me at Roosevelt a couple weeks ago.
