for trolling, has anyone use a sharpie or other permenant marker to mark distances on line?
i don't have line counting reels. just was thinking that i could pull some line off of my reels out in my back yard, and then mark it every 20 feet or so with a marker so that i could easily see how much line is in the water at a certain time.
would the mono line absorb the blank ink?
I was wondering the same. I currently use bobber stops to show my depth, just tie them on before my trolling rigs and then set them to desired depth, so when stops are at waters edge then thats the depth im running.
Maybe somonehas a better way...........

I do when tight lining. I mark the line at the reel only when I find the right depth. I tried marking at ever 10 ft but found that the marker will fade after about 3 hours of fishing with the marks in the water.
I have done this also and it works too. But only used one and set it at the reel when correct depth is found.Quote:

I think you'll have a hard time with mono. Marking braid will work much better. For mono, I would mark the line with white out. It will still wash off eventually, but it will hold up better than you think. To make it even more visible, color the white out with the permanent marker.Quote:

i mark my line at the reel when i find the right depth spider riggn with a sharpie, works good for me
use the line clip on the side of my open face reel that's what there for really works well in the winter.
I use braided line when fishing brush piles. I mark my braid with needle and thread. Pierce the braid with the needle and tie a short tag of thread on the braid. You can use different colors for different depths.
