It never hurts to buy it longer, especially if you are fishing on windy days with decent size waves. Nothing is worse than having the trolling motor come out of the water, every time the bow pitches up. By buying it longer you can always keep it raised up higher and just lower when you need it.
I run a deep-V and use a 62 inch shaft. I don't need it all the time, but when I go to Big Stone in South Dakota I lower it down, because of the waves on that lake. With my old Motor Guide, it was the same as usless there because it was out of the water so much. Fishing around my Home I just raise the shaft and never had a problem with it.
