trolling motor batteries
ok I 90% of the time am sitting in the front of the boat, slow trolling, watching the depth finder/fish locator, verry important to me, I have two AGM batteries, group 27 yellow top from orileys, they last about 3 hrs. with constant use, I have been reading, checking other web sites, other state forums, asked crappie dot commers from all over. I have come to one conclusion HELP do not have a clue what to get I would like to do what the big boys do, troll for 6 hrs at the least, any help from the learned bunch on here. PLEASE.

I bought a wallmart series 30+ and it seems to hold up really well but I'm only using a 36 lb thrust and not constant trolling. Batteries are a pain in the ___

You might want to use a dedicated battery to run you HDS and have the trolling motor separate from it. If you have the room for another battery.

Hook two like batteries in parallel and they should last you all day long.;)

Hey Beagle, Something don't sound right. I am using 2 deep cycle batteries marked 31M-DC, I think they are 115 amp. I buy mine from a local place in central Illinois called Rexx Batteries. They cost $75.00 and have been installed since 2007. I actually use my big boat on a limited horsepower lake so I can ONLY use my trolling motor. I have trolled a full day and several miles with only a slight decrease in power. I use a 65 pound thrust, Minn Kota Maxxum. Three hours just don't seem right to me. Good luck.

I agree cropeez, these are the second set of batteries the group 31 is what I am looking at, Gator I have the 24 vdc batteries only for the trolling motor, opps forgot to mention that did'nt I. depth finders are on a seperate circuit and the wires for the trolling motor is a dedecated run, nothing from the batteries to the motor but a fuse link. gabowman as stated above thank you for the reply, any suggestions on what brand is in ones opinions is better than another as far as lasting ability.

About 3 mos ago I put 2 of the Optima blue top dual purpose batteries in the boat. I'm not sure about O'reileys yellow top ones, but the yellow top in Optima is a starting battery only and not a deep cycle for trolling motors or RV use.
So far I've used mine near constant for over 5 hours on the 2 and 3 speed setting fighting the wind in Piney Creek and occasionally kicking it up to #5, or "ski" setting to move to the next stickups and they were still at 12.5V

Beagle I have 2 group 31's and they will let you troll for a good 5 to 6 hours. Thats on a 20' boat with a 80 lb. thrust, now thats not on high all day.

Have you checked your trolling motor prop for monofilament lately? Last weekend I had trouble with my batteries losing power and had a good bit of line wrapped around the shaft.

have you checked the voltage after you have charged them up, may be the batteries, or the charger. Try charging the batteries up, then, let the batteries "rest" from the charge for 24 hrs, then should get 12.5 or better on a digital voltage meter after fully charged. Read just the other day you should let the batteries "rest" for 24 hrs BEFORE checking with the DVM. I have used a wally world deep cycle battery for 3-4 years, a charge doesn't last as long as it use to, so I am considering new TM battery but hate to buy one now for it to sit all winter.
