Jacomo report

Took the new boat out on Jacomo Sunday morning to do some crappie fishing. Don't know water temp, but it didn't take long to figure out they just aren't on the banks yet. So I moved out a little off shore and started with a slip bobber set down around 9-10ft deep. Pumpkin/chart garland minnow minders with a nibble. That's exactly where the crappie were at.

Caught 10 or so, spent some of the time just running around, looking at laydowns and other structure that I could see. Given where the fish were, and that they were painted up, I'm betting by next weekend, they will either be on the banks, or in the 4-6ft depth, and a lot easier to find.

I was straight across from the main marina, up into sailboat a bit, and the cove right next to the marina. Wind finally got up enough where it was too much. So I left.

First boat I've had that "legally" is under the HP rating.

Nice catch and boat ! As for the water temp and spawning phase , the temp is 68-70 at Smithville and the females I have cleaned in the past week were only half full of eggs . I'm thinking they are in transition into post spawn in most areas .

Coosa or Cuda? Can't tell from that angle. Give me a hoot next time you want to venture over there, I'd like to see those lakes.

I was told by a park ranger if you put a boat of any kind on jacomo you must have a sticker on it reguardless if it has a motor or not.

Yeah, you need a sticker. Not sure if you live in Jackson Co or not. If you do, you can get a yearly pass for $24. That gets you on all the Jackson Co lakes for a year. Blue Springs, Jacomo, Longview, and Prairie Lee.
The only pain, is apparently they want you to launch from boat ramps only, so I'm probably going to test that on Longview.

I'll PM you later this week so we can set up the Jacomo trip.

My wife would love a mess of Red ear for dinner, so I'm in.

Sticker, check. Will research where I can get one today.
Launch from ramps only, forget-about-it. That's one of the perks of fishing out of tuperware, you launch when and where you want.

The park office is open 7days a week, call them and see what info you need to have with you to get the sticker. I can't remember off the top of my head what you'll need.

They said just id and $42/year. Ouch, oh well... it's the price we pay, right.

Hey guys, I just saw this post. The $24 is well worth it considering you can fish all of the Jackson County lakes. You can pick one up at the Ranger Station off of Woods Chapel and I believe Ligget Rd. Anyway I haven't been out for a week or so so I'm itching to get a line wet where ever. Always looking to catch good bluegills and red ears. I did pretty good on bluegill at Maple Leaf Conservation lake this time last year so planning to check it out maybe this week. I will post if I go.

I live in Cass so they invert the numbers for us.

Not a whole lot of places to put in a Yak at Jacomo other than the boat ramps or the beach. Most yakkers put in at the main boat ramp. There is a nice pea gravel bank next to the courtesy dock on the south side of the ramp. Tuesday evenings there are often 20+ yaks cruising the waters of Jacomo. Haven't seen any of them fish just paddling around.

Weather looks good for Saturday! Should be a good time.

Hey did you guys make it out to Jacomo Saturday? Just wondering how you did? I haven't been out there yet this year but was thinking about hitting it perhaps this coming weekend. Mr Duncan I was intrigued by your thought that they weren't on the banks "yet" which tells me you think the spawn has yet to happen at Jacomo? With the fishing I did at Priarie Lee this spring I thought the spawn would have passed by now. You know more about the Jackson County lakes then I do though, so I'm thinking about hitting Jacomo this weekend, especially if you think the spawn is about to happen or is happening right now. Nice looking yak by the way!!

Well, lets just say I was wrong about the spawn.... kcbrown said some of the females he had were spent. We spent several hours on both Jacomo, and Blue Springs. Once again the wind was up. I think most of what I did was exercise, while I watched kcbrown catch catfish, bluegill, bass, and crappie. I can now predict that before long the summer pattern will be on. rotfl

The wind was pretty nasty both days. No real pattern, or scattered might be the best description. The yak was a lot of fun, and I look forward to many trips in it this year.

Those were two tough days. Good outing all the same. The channel cats were on fire. I think I caught six between the two days. Healthy lakes, everything I caught was chunky and good condition. Looking forward to learning more about them.

Bput time to start fishing the steeper brushpiles at Jacomo. For trollers use bandit 300 cranks.

That is right up Gordon's alley. When he told me he pulls cranks with the kayak, I couldn't believe it. I do now. :cheers2
