I am thinking about purchasing a new boat. This will be the first new boat since 1982 so I'm sure things have changed a bit.
Here's my situation. It comes with an installed 12v tm. I want a 24v with gps. Would the wiring need replacing? Would I just install the tm in place of the 12v or are modifications needed?

Most likely it would not. A 24 volt motor running the same amount of thrust as a 12 volt motor will draw 1/2 as much current, so you could use a 24 volt motor with almost double the thrust as a 12 volt and utilize the same wire safely. By "new" boat I'm thinking brand new and not just new to you. The majority of boats made today utilize bigger wiring from the factory.

A couple of considerations need to be made.
1. do you have room to securely add the extra battery?
2. what gauge is the wire currently installed? If the wire is too small for the application, you run the risk of creating a voltage drop over its length which can create heat and added amperage draw. As MD stated, you are probably good, but your new 24V motor will also draw about 50A at full throttle.
3. make sure you have a circuit breaker installed that is the RIGHT SIZE for the motor you have and it is installed as close as possible to the batteries.
See the chart from Minn Kota and compare it with your new boat to make sure you're on the right path for wire size and breaker to be trouble free.
