Haven't been in a while but I'm going this weekend too. I expect to find them about 10 feet deep and I plan to vertical fish with jigs and minnows. That might change as soon as I get on the water tho. Hopefully you have a fish finder - just start motoring around and you'll soon see what depth the majority of fish (crappie, perch, bass, etc) are holding that's the depth you want to fish.
Also if you're new to the lake take a look around to see where the other boats are going, and then check out similar areas with similar water depth. Don't crowd up on the other boats though there's so much fish in that lake there is no one magic spot ;) Just use other boats as a general guideline, and remember they could be just as clueless as you so take it with a grain of salt :D
Thank you ppowell for your help, I will follow your advise and I wish you luck this weekend with your fishing. I will post back how I made out.
I agree with ppowell about watching others. Anytime I go to a new lake, I spend more time watching others than fishing sometimes. Also stop and ask others. Fishermen are great about sharing. I am going to high rock tomorrow but will probably pull jigs. Expect to find them in about 18 fow holding 10-12 foot there, but could be wrong.
I fished Sharon Harris yesterday found them in 18-20 fow fished bout 8-10' tight lining jigs
That is what I am talking about Mac. Gives me high hopes for High Rock tomorrow.
i gotta say im disapointed in my fellow crappie.comers in there best advice is " watch others", whatever happened to finding your own fish!!, heck with yalls advice a man would be better off spending his money on a good set of binoculars than a good fish finder, maybe the next post will be ,whats the best binos to spy on your fellow fisherman with? there are "community spots that everyone knows about and then there are those little unique areas that are only found through trial and error, now sometimes two good fisherman will find the same area on there own and just happen to show up in the same day, and thats fine but to tell someone to just go out and see where others are at and just join in isnt helping them at all, it hurts them in the long run, its kinda that whole give a man a fish he eats for a day but teach a man to fish and he eats whenever he wants thing, and then there is just the personal satisfaction of locating and catching your own and often times bigger fish
I hope this link will help you understand and figure out any body of water. Keep in mind if bass eat crappie then crappie may be staged up or suspended near by these areas in deeper water. This is just a lengthy theory video but a wealth of info to me. Tight lines

You can get information from your local tackle shop, online, people pulling out at the boat ramp, etc. Getting to a lake and looking around to see what everyone else is doing is a good idea. If your fishing 40 ft channel breaks and everyone is else is fishing 10 foot flats, that should tell you something. That's all I'm saying it's not about stealing spots.
