Intro and report 11/27

New to the forum, new to crappie fishing. I live in Haughton about 15 min from Cypress. My family is from south louisiana so I spend a lot of time fishing for specks and reds in the marsh. This is the first time I'be fished up here in the 10 years I'be lived here. I've been dying to find some fish close to home though. Today was the day. Unfortunately the only reason I fished Cypress today was my guide on Toledo Bend ended up in the hospital.

Decided to make the 15 minute drive up to Cypress and give it a shot. Launched at 1130. Fished shiners on the bottom drifting in the wind. My fish finder wasn't working (temp only) so I have no idea how deep, guessing about 15ft, temp was 62. I think the saltwater finally had it's way with the transducer. Drifted from the dam out to the middle usually got 1 or 2 fish per drift. It was a blast! Biggest was around 1.5.

Couple of questions for you:
When drifting and you hook up, do you usually anchor and fish there for a while?

Is shiners going to be the most productive bait?

What water temperature makes these fish more active?

Good morning Allen, glad you found your way here. Since I'm from very South La. I can't help you much with fishing details of North La. although I've fished Cypress with my good bud and moderator Doc Waldo. There are many here that fish Cypress and I'm sure some will join in to try and answer your questions. Too bad you didn't pop in a couple of weeks ago and you could have driven over to D'Arbonne and join us for a meet, greet, and eat. OH, and we fish too. Perhaps next year.

Welcome to the forum, Ryan. I live in Rocky Mount about 20 miles from Haughton. Mostly go to Ivan Lake, but sometimes I go to Cypress or Black Bayou. I never use shiners so don't know if they are more productive. Usually when I find a productive spot I throw out a marker and just use trolling motor to keep near it. If it's too windy for that I use a drift chain to either slow down or anchor. Lots of folk on here know more about fishing Cypress than I do. Theygotaeat is an expert on it.

Thanks for the info. I picked up the shiner advice from the forum here. I appreciated it because I would have had no idea where to begin.

With the tube jigs and such, are folks trolling those too on spider rigs? Or is that more of a still fishing technique. I could see how the crank baits would do well trolling, we do that for specks a lot.

I love fishing and am pretty excited to not have to travel 5 hours to Dularge or Delacroix to put a mess of fish together (although I still will because it's so fun). I really appreciate the wisdom.

One more thing, any ideas why my lowrance elite 7 hdi only displays water temp and SOG. It just said stopped for sonar and downscan. All of the connections look good as far as I can tell.

I fish Cypress quite a bite. I mostly just drift, sometimes using a sock if wind a bit much. Throw out a marker if I find concentration. Shiners on two poles and jigs on two poles. Sometimes bite is 50/50, sometimes shiners are better.
