I started with four, then six, then eight, then ten, then eight. I think a good approach would be to play around with about six. Move them around and try to see what kind of layout will work for your boat. Mindful that as time goes by ideas will change. Try to avoid drilling, moving, redrilling. Eight rods is a lot to keep up with unless they are well laid out. Navigation plays a role as well.
Maybe a picture of the boat will allow others to offer better advice. I’m no expert.
