I "push" jigs, which is basically a crossbreed of those two methods, when I'm not "casting" jigs, of course. :biggrin
But, if I were fishing an unfamiliar body of water .... definitely longlining, so I could cover as much territory as possible in the least amount of time, especially pre-spawn since they're likely to be somewhat scattered & moving.
Longlinning every month of the year. Cover more water then if really cold tight line after they are found
I'm spider rigging. Waters I fish are murky and stump filled. Much more effective to have a slower presentation, most of the time.

My best answer is both. Longlining can find them quicker, but some times they want the baits slower. You can long line with any spinning rod set up. Longer poles for spyder rigs, you need to get baits as far from boat as possible. Run trolling motor as little as possible, when spyder rigging.
