Classic Crappies
Saturday June 3rd, me and my tournament partner fished the Barren Crappie Trail Classic to finish up this tournament season.
It was a warm 93 degrees, and the boat traffic was heavy. From the 96 boat- bass tournament that launched before us, to the normal pontoons, wake boats, and jet skis that are out and about on a Saturday in June.
We were fortunate to get on some fish that were big enough, and fortunate to be able to keep em alive for 8 hours, until weigh in. Managed to snag a 1st place finish and win some cool trophies.
Water temps were 81 degrees and water clarity was gin clear. We fished brush piles in 10-15 fow, and stayed back off of them 30-40 feet. Cast and drag 1/16 oz jigs.
Two things that were key- a millennium marine umbrella, so we didn’t have a heat stroke. And the 64 quart Rtic cooler, we used to keep the fish alive. Put a big bag of ice in it, filled it with lake water, and added G-Juice to kill the chlorine from the ice. The colder water and an aerator kept the fish alive.
Had another cooler on the boat, filled just with ice- to put the eaters in. Had 7 tournament fish plus 33 eaters to get our double limit of 40.
That was the last ride for my old 1979 Brown Ranger. Have run that boat for the last 10 years. There’s no telling how many crappie have been caught in that boat. But it’s time to retire her. A tournament win, awesome trophies, and a bunch of filets is a good way to send her out on top.
Got a newer Blue & Silver Ranger that I’m switching to. Starting the process of swapping the motor, and all equipment over this week.
Gonna take my time, and rig everything the way I want it, on Blue. It might be later this summer, but I’ll post pics of the new ride, when I get her done.
