Lewis Smith Lake
Could anyone give me some suggestions about crappie fishing on Smith Lake. I don't know anything about the lake other than its deep. I'm going to get the chance to fish the lake here before long and I've tried to find fishing reports and any other information about the lake that I can, but I haven't had much luck. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

what part of the lake are you fishing, always have my best luck in the back of the creeks when the water is about 45 to 50 degree range fishing blow down trees and around boat docks 15 to 20 foot , use a 1/4 ounce white crappie jig slow cast around the trees, most people drop a lot trees around there docks ,look for the docks with security lights mounted close to the water that will tell if they fish they use the lights to attract fish in the summer months , lights draw in the bugs for the fish, be careful some folks get mad when you fish there tree tops next to there docks, if you find a flat next to deep water with bottom structure 20 to 30 foot you can catch them jigging 1/4 ounce jig white always my best luck caught couple crappie last saturday jigging a hopkins 1/2 ounce spoon

Thanks ADAMB
Thank you for your reply.I don't really know where I'm going to fish. I had someone tell me the upper sipsey area was a pretty good place to start out trying to crappie fish, if I wasn't familier with the lake. They also said you could have pretty good luck around the boat docks like you have indicated in your reply. Where's the best place to get a map of the lake?

What fond memories! My wife an I spent our honeymoon in my Uncle's 'cabin' (it was a full sized house they called a 'cabin') on Smith in 1968.
I fished it all during the mid 60's... but never for Crappie. We were always fishing for spotted bass. The record came out of Smith in those years, what a great fishery.

Fished Smith this past Saturday 02/14/2009. Had 16 fairly nice crappie. Water temp 50-52. Most are still quite deep. Caught around boat docks and deep submurged tops. Still slow. Should pick up in the next couple of weeks. Caught most on live minnows, a few on red/white tube jigs.
