Casting ?
I have a really dumb question for you experienced kayak guys. I’ve been fishing laydowns a lot. I’ll float up in good position. Make a cast and then before I can even get reeled in I’m heading straight for the tree. I’ve tried every casting position I can and always end up in the tree. What am I doing wrong??Is there a way to prevent that without anchoring??I know this is dumb but I just can’t figure it out??lol

It can be hard to hold position without an anchor of some sort.

Believe it or not, your kayak will slowly trend toward the cast direction,Kayaks are also easily pushed by even the slightest breeze.I more often than not tie off to a handy branch or stump if available.I also make use on an anchor pole when fishing shallow water ( up to 8’ deep ).i do have an anchor for anchoring to the bottom, but am reluctant to use it if there is much sunken brush.

Give a backwards paddle or two when you get in position. Your forward momentum is gliding you into the tree.

I experience the same thing. Crank baits are worse than jigs due to resistance of the bill or lip. Acts like a small winch.
Pedal kayaks are king for this. A medium drift sock will aide greatly for the paddler. A lot easier to deal with than an actual drop anchor.

Yeah where I’m fishing there’s lots of brush. So I’m reluctant to use an anchor. So I thought you guys might have some tricks to share. Thanks for the info.

I’m fairly new to this and didn’t know about anchor poles or drift socks. I’ll have to give those a try. I think I could make me an anchor pole.

U tube for anchor poles ,easy to make and cheap.I also use a large spring clamp with a cord attached, simply ease up to a snag or stump, and clamp off.

Oh I forgot the other secret weapon I have used!
A small sculling paddle. I don’t have this one but similar.
