    Default New to powder painting

I have got an order on the way to get started. Have read numerous posts on doing this and think I can, hopefully anyway, get this figured out. As for right now just going to be using 5 colors...white, pink, chartreuse, purple, and June bug.. One question I do have is I see alot about mixing the clear in with the colors. I've seen 50/50, 2/1. Is this absolutely necessary and what would be the best starting point? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give this 50yr old newbie.

I don’t know if mixing clear is necessary but I started doing it and think it helps. It hasn’t hurt anything and helps paint last longer. So far I have kept it simple and just used measuring spoons and have added 1 level teaspoon per ounce of paint. So for my 2 oz jars I’m adding 2 tsp. This is easy for me to remember and I don’t have to weigh anything. I’ve read not to add to disco colors and I’m not sure about candy colors but I would think fine for those. I started a thread when I started powder painting and there are a bunch of good questions and answers for someone new to powder painting. If you haven’t already please check it out you might find it helpful.

I don’t clear coat them, but then again I stopped using my fluid bed and my oven. I just dip and go and they do just fine. It is really easy and I think you will enjoy experimenting some with the cool effects.

I will use a UV enhancement mixed into a clear paint. For eyes I like the 3d kind with a clear coat of some kind over them to seal them in place. UV resin does well for that but some can make the eyes smoky. Of course you have to glue them, too.

    Post up your creations please.
Maybe they will bite this one……

Thanks for the tips. Hopefully it all goes well and I don't make too big a mess of it all.

You will do fine. Messes can be cleaned. Myself and everyone else I’m sure has made a mess with it before. I usually lay a towel down since I’m on kitchen table then when done it’s easy to just grab up and throw in wash. Let us know how it goes.

I don't clear but they say it makes jigs more smooth. I use UV some but apply it as an overcoat.. There is a lot of trial and error but I fish even my icky paint jobs in brush piles and have plenty of volunteer crappie not complain. I love this hobby and confident you will do just fine. There is a lot of knowledge here at CDC and these folks will not steer you wrong. Enjoy the addiction.

I agree that fishermen are a lot more picky than the crappie although the crappie do get finicky on occasion. I just finished dipping 5 dozen 1/16 round heads bright green color. Very stress relieving for me.

I believe in the Kiss system for most things i do.
I watched quite a few videos before i started.
i decided that for my purpose i didnt need to get very deep into it.
I made a rack from a section of wire closet shelving which is necessary to have.
I had a heat gun and started by using that by making a device to hold it steady.
You need be carefull when using a heat gun as it can be easy to burn yourself.
Not bad, but bad enough to be uncomfortable for awhile.
So i tried using a candle for heating them and it works as well and is much easier to control.
They are about 1 1/4” in diameter and about 2 1/2” high and come with a glass container from Ebay for just a couple bucks for 2 of them.
So far i havent even used a half of one.
I shake the jar well to loosen the paint, i use long nose pliars, heat the jig over the flame, then dip it in the powder, back over the flame for a brief time, then onto the rack for cooling.
Thats it, if i dont lose the jig first i will get at least a day before i discard the jig.
