Problem filling mold
I have the do it all flutter jig mold and I am having a hard time getting the tail portion of the mold to pour on the 1/4 size. It leaves a small portion on the tail side void of any lead only on one side. This jig has the wire form running through the center. I have tried different temps and heating the mold but still have problems. New to pouring jigs, another question is I hear about flux, why is it used, when do you use it, and what do you use. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Place the spout of the lead pot directly into the gate of the 1/4 oz cavity. Also might try smoking the mold.

I was also going to suggest smoking the mold. I had a small mold years back that gave me a problem, that stopped after I smoked itand hasn’t been an issue since. I smoke any small molds with collars or small areas.

Thank you for the feedback. I had smoked the mold and had the heat setting around 5 1/2 . Tried turning heat up but molds were still bad. Went down to around 4 temp setting and seemed to pour best. I think what made the biggest difference was heating the mold along with the wire inserts. Thanks again for all the help, probably will not be last question I have.

When I was pouring I realized that the more I did the better they came out. I found that it was because the mold was getting hotter allowing the lead to run better. So I developed the habit of laying the mold on top of the lead pot whenever I needed to lay it down for whatever reason. I even loaded the hooks while it was on the pot. What a difference. I very rarely had a bad casting. And yes you can burn yourself if you are not careful.

You can hold the mold over a lit candle once in a while the smoke makes them slick and they pour good BUT if you paint them you will have to clean them with alcohol or the paint won’t stickOriginally Posted by bugman
