That's what I have done, with a slight modification - instead of just one strand, I use two, each one just a little to the sides of the hook tip, and I mean just barely, kinda like a vee. In my mind, if the lure is sliding over a limb on it's side, this will provide a little more protection to the hook tip. Seems to be working for me.
Do you happen to have a picture? I've been drilling in mono guards for years and am interested in experimenting with some wire set ups on my bat jigs and a few others.
