My Dad once told me that the mantles were made from silk.

Actually the mantles become an ash once they have been lit, and they do well unless something happens to touch them.
I have an earlier version i bought in the early 70s. Same except for the dial as shown on this one.
They also made a one burner stove, using the same setup without the lantern top section. I have and still use 2 of them.
In 1950 i was 15 years old, when a group headed up by my father built a hunting camp in a very remote area of North Central PA. We had 2 all stainless Coleman lanterns looking very much like this one hanging in that camp which ran on kerosene. One of them still hangs in our current camp in the same region of PA.

Seeing the photos brings back memories of elk camps 35 years ago and the friends I shared those camps with. A couple of those friends are now gone.
Thanks for the memories!

Gerald Cromer collects and restores Coleman lanterns. He's got a zillion of them but probably would take one more if he sees this.

Thanks Ray for the note about this. I have a good number of this model 288. This is the kind I give to new campers that come camping with us, usually a 2 burner stove if they need on. It's a easy lantern to start people out on. The S/S that was referred to above and kerosene would have been a model 237 if it was a Coleman. It was nickel plated. It was one of the best kerosene lanterns that Coleman made and one of the brightest too. 500 CP

Can still hear the hiss of those old lanterns and smell the burning white gas.
