we used to tip accordingly , gave the captain in Mexico a really expensive hat one time because he didnt have one and some cash for him and the crew too ....
gave the costa rican fellas some beer and cash because they looked thirsty .....
typically around 15 to 20 % is the going rate from what I have seen , but as stated if the guy or guys are working really hard it could be whatever you feel is right
gave one of the first mates a few extra bucks to clean one fish I ketched a certain way instead of the way they were doing it on a trip out of Florida ....
lots of times the "help" on the larger vessels don't make much money ....keep that in mind too
sum kawl me tha outlaw ketchn whales

They actually, when possible include their catch in our total fish count. That’s up to 12 more walleyes in my crews take. After reading these posts I see charter fishing isn’t for everybody. To each their own though.
Hey Chaunc, I feel the same wayAmount to tip for charter fishing trip If you book a charter it isn’t cheap, you are there for memories and good times with friends, the Capt. And mate need to make a living too! If the people here are cheap suckers they need to take there money and buy fish at the market instead they can get more that way. I have charter many times, now I fish with my son in our boat , but are good friends with a couple of charter captains at port Clinton. People don’t be cheap ! It's not a process of being cheap, it's a matter of transparency.
Charge what you need to charge to run your business, which includes paying your employees a proper wage for their labor. Don't depend on the kindness of strangers to feed your family or theirs. If you pay slave labor wages to your crew, who's being cheap now?
Don't say you charge 400 for a charter, and then expect 150 - 200 extra in tips. Say the Charter will be 600 dollars. Or do you quote that low a price to book clients and then expect tips, isn't that bait and switch? Excuse the pun. Same tactics as used by shifty used car salesmen to lure buyers in, then charge extra for coatings, rust protection, etc. When was the last time you tipped your car salesman? If you didn't, does that make you cheap?
Or do you expect tips from clients for Capt. and crew to be cash, so it's off the books. Non-Transparent, dishonest and illegal.
I have lived long enough to know that life is not free and not all persons are above board, and some are cheap. Don't paint with such a wide brush all those that find the expected tip a turnoff, as cheap. I worked all my life at the wages my employer and I agreed upon for the duties agreed upon. If I did my job, I got paid. If I didn't, I got fired. I never expected a tip from anyone for just doing my job.
I apologize to the OP for highjacking his thread and wish him success and many good memories from his trip.
My rant is over. The Blue Plate Special begins shortly at the Sizzler.

Let’s keep this about what one would tip and keep the jabs and back and forth out of it. Thanks…
