    Default Wilhelm Report

Hit the lake 2 pm and fished till 7 pm. I wanted to experiment with some long line trolling jigs but it was just too windy. Caught many crappies mostly too small. Scattered through 5 hours we probably caught 50 crappie and a dozen bluegills. Might have been 8 keepers mixed in with a pile of 8" and less crappie. Crappies were moving along the creek channel north of the causeway 8-9' deep. Vertical jigging 1/32 oz. hand ties gold body, gold head, yellow tail with gold flash was the best producer. White body with yellow tail and gold flash did ok as did gray head, gray chenille, gray tail with a little flash. Of course tipped with a nibble. I'll get some pics posted tomorrow as I left my camera in the boat.

Here's a few pics. I tried a bunch of new stuff including the Pautzke crappie fire balls<< first picture green salmon egg looking things. They worked but didn't seem to stay on the hook any better than nibbles.

Thanks for the post. We catch alot of small ones to but we generally catch enough keepers to make it worth our while. Want to head out there soon. I really like fishing Wilhelm, one of my favorite places to fish.

Usually we chase bluegills musky or walleye on Wilhelm. Wilhelm used to be a bluegill bonanza and I got my personal best muskie there. I do like fishing the lake south of the causeway especially after the water warms. My intention was to stay south but the wind was out of the SE and made that side too rough for my first attempt at long line trolling jigs. I've got a trailer problem I need to fix before I hit the lake again. Nothing wrong with it but I'm having problems getting the boat on the trailer since I got rid of my 90 hp motor. The back end of the boat is now too light to power load. Dang bow comes in too low if the trailer is deep or not enough power if the trailer isn't deep enough. I'll get that figured out. Hey it is always something needs attending to. Good Luck !!

Thanks again for your Wilhelm reports. I live over in the Brookville area and like the information that you are providing. It's really a treat for me when I can come over and fish Wilhelm. I'm getting to know the lake more every time I get to fish it. We do very well on the crappie but we haven't tried fishing for walleye yet. Is there much of a walleye population to troll for them? My brother and I troll the Clarion River for walleye but that is hit or miss. Some days we do very well but you have to hit the water early before the water skiers blow you off. You have to about 10 or 11 o'clock to find the fish.

We've caught some walleye trolling a crawler harness with a bottom bouncer. Not near as many as on Pymatuning. I like it when Pymatuning is loaded with boats as I do not care for juking and jiving around while trolling. It's been a while since we tried Wilhelm for walleyes (had the Lake Erie bug) but the biologist numbers from 2018 look pretty good.

Sounds like an awesome day. I’ve never fished wilhelm but I think I will one of these years when my time isn’t so precious! Love to fish new places, but stick to the old places because I can typically catch more fish! With limited time it makes it tough to explore new waters.. few questions, does wilhelm fish crappie like pymatuning? If I ever make it there should I search for brush, weed lines, drop offs? Quite honestly I enjoy doing research and I would do that all myself, but just trying to get a hint where to start! I see a guy on YouTube always posting videos from wilhelm and he seems to do pretty good!

also, I have to appreciate the shirt, I’ve seen it a million times. I worked there from 14 years old up until probably 31 or 32 off and on. Started cutting grass at 14 around the boats, when I turned 16 they let me rib, and from 18-forever I cleaned all the fish! For years I went from the everyday job, over to the bait shop just to have fun and clean fish. I had the hobby everyone hated! Still love cleaning fish to this day!

In all honesty I have rarely fished crappie on Wilhelm. Best day for numbers we ever had was this past Wednesday. Those we got this week were on the old creek bed North of the causeway. I have to add some info. Wednesday I found them due to my nose being stuck to the Humminbird. I have a Helix with Mega Down Imaging. Boy did it ever light up when I crossed that creek channel. Wife and I hit it often for bluegills a few years ago. We would catch a few crappie mixed in with the bluegills. For me it is an easy place to go for a few hours. My Navionics sd card map shows a lot of cribs and rock piles they have added so it should fish like Pymatuning.

I still have noodle rods from Richie's. 4 of them are those brown Erie series rods he was selling at a good price. Used to lend them to relatives who wanted to try steelhead fishing. That was my top place to shop especially for that scent they made from what I have no idea. Loved it up there the colder the better. Then it got crowded. The wild bunch came from all over. I saw grown men chasing after each other with clubs. I am not crazy about full contact fishing so we sort of gave it up.

    Thanks for the info!!

I hear you when it comes to crowds. I gave it up when the rv’s started taking up the parking lots.. I have not fished for stream steelhead in probably 5 years. They are a blast, but it’s definitely not worth it anymore to me. I use to get the courtland rods, they had a lifetime warranty and they never questioned anything, if it broke they replaced it!! I think too many people took advantage of that and courtland got smart and made you send the rod in with a receipt to show it was the manufacture issues, not user error ha ha.
