Default SE Opening Day Pushback Worked Out!

What a miserable day here in the SE part of our state. Close quarters in the cold rain - what fun that would have been. LOL hope everyone is well. Local creeks are running high, fast, and dirty.

As of a few days ago we were slightly under the normal for yearly rain fall amounts in the Harrisburg area. I am sure with constant rains we experienced today we are over that situation. I live on a small freestone brook trout stream that came up some but never got dirty. Just a little color to it. It will be interesting to see what it looks like tomorrow after day break. It is a toss up as to when and if there will be a opening day of trout in Pa. I think no mater how they do it we will still get large crowds. A good friend lives on a stretch of the Yellowbreeches creek in Cumberland co and told me they dumped all the fish to be stocked in the area into one spot. If that is true and I have no reason to doubt him that will only create crowding and not distancing as the CDC is asking for. I realize it is almost impossible for the limited personal from the Pa fish commission to make a good attempt to spread these fish out on there own and I have to assume they are doing the best they can.

Sorry to hear that as the Yellowbreeches is a classic piece of water. Lucky for me I’m in no way a hard core trout angler so I’m just waiting for a little warmer water and start pounding the gills, crappies and smallies.

I can enjoy some warm water fishing myself. Where do you fish at? There is not any really good crappie fishing in my local area. IMO. I do not mind traveling and have put a good bit of fishing time in Va. Most of the Va crappie fishing is very early in the year. I did 2 different trips to Beaver Dam park to fish the upper end of the creek in January. We had some warm weather and they were in there in numbers. Almost everyone had limits of 12 inch plus fish. However as soon as it cooled down they shut off. I also like going to Chickahominy ( spelling) river - Dam. We launch out of Ed Allens and go up to the upper end. This can be very good for crapppie and other species in March. I spent a lot of time in the Williamsburg area as my diseased inlaws lived there for 30 years. Most people think Colonial Williamsburg and Bush gardens but it also has many lakes that offer some great warm water fishing. In March motel rates are extremely reasonable and they have a jump on the spring weather.

That is a great question. Perhaps they need to do something else. I remember them rationing gas in the 70s even license plates one day and odd the next. You could only get so many gallons also. I think our local station was 5 gallons. The ESSO ( Exon) was closed but our local doctor needed gas and he opened it for him and the line was a hundred yrds long with in minutes.Or just let people fish and not really publish it. Probably most know the reason for opening day is money. States that changed from a opener to a all open season all lost considerable revenue. It would be really hard for that to change on a permanent basics. I do not have a answer and no mater what they do some one will complain. IMO they need to try to limit the number of people fishing and a opening day is not going to help.

They spend too much money on the program, but no one can convince them of that. Guess it will never change either.

Trout fishing was my #1 passion for well over 50 years. I've seen a good bit of change and heard a lot of promises from the PFC. Nothing has improved the program in NW PA. The trout program (put & take) has been dying for over 25 years. That includes the steelhead program. I figured this year was going to be a "dump the truck in a couple spots" then forget about it. In my opinion this is just a waste of the resource. I understand this year is a challenge, a deadly challenge with this plague virus. Not a lot of safe ways to get those fish in the water and do justice to the resource. Unfortunately the only salvation for those fish (and fishermen) is high water through April to scatter them some but..........most people will jam in a couple spots. I'm not into full contact fishing for trout or anything else. I think I'll wait for warmer weather and find a lonely spot for panfish. Wish you all a safe time with whatever turns your crank.

I have been in contact with Hbg fish and boat the last 2 or 3 weeks. Currently you can e-mail them but to my knowledge there is no one in the office. If you need a license go online and it does not take long. I had a problem and sent them a e-mail and it was taken care of in a day or two.
