Default Crappie Creel Limit on Lake Shenango

    https://pfbc.pa.gov/bioreports/bio20...enangoLake.pdf

I found this info on the Penna Fish & Boat Commission site. Scroll down past the info on striper, and white bass. You will also unde4rstand how they came up with length and creel limits we have now.

Didn't know how fast white and black crappie grow, until I read this info.

White crappie years ago were what we caught in the lake, in the 70's era.

Does the lake serve better for one over the other? Thought that blacks did better in clear lakes.

    Comments welcome.

That report is way outdated. 2017. Anyway, the lake has always had a great population of the black crappies. Easy to find and catch year round. The whites are more seasonal. Easier to find and catch in spring and fall. They are hard to find and catch in the summer because they like to suspend over the deeper water areas and those are the areas where they water ski all summer.

Yes I know it was from 2017, but it explains how they decided on the size and limits. Plus learned a bit about the two, as to how long it takes them to get to 9 or 10 inches. Whites sure do grow quicker.

That is an interesting read. I feel bad for keeping monsters now!! Didn’t realize when you get a real slab it could be upwards of 7 years old. Reading that I can only wonder how many crappie are in these darn lakes!

They’re all going to be stunted 6 and 7 inch fish in three more years. They spawn when they’re only two years old. We’ll be taking all the keepers and nothing left but little ones. There’s going to be some big musky and pike there tho. Stripers too. If you fish shallow brush you can catch fish all year.
