Good luck, I don’t even know what decent weather is anymore! Every time I go down there it rains or I am stuck in coves because the wind doesn’t cooperate! Hopefully Wednesday and Thursday this week will be decent. I don’t know what’s worse anymore my addiction for chasing crappie or giant whitetails!
Although we put 25 crappies in the box, it really wasn’t a good day. My two buddies struggled. They got six of the 25. They wanted to go in and get minnows so we pulled lines and went right away and picked them up at 9. Only caught 2 with them dadgum things. Jigs and nibbles did the job for me. Spawn is winding down up there. These 40* nights aren’t helping any either. Off the water by 2.
Went out this evening boated probably 50-60 crappie. All off jigs and crappie nibbles as well. Mix bag of black and white crappie few good ones with one being over the 2lb mark. Will be at it in the morning, hopefully same location with same results! Will let you know how it goes tomorrow!
Slow am bite from the same spot. They were there just wouldn’t turn on. Ended up putting 9 more in the box and threw back 7-8. I will take pics of a few decent ones and post when I clean them! I couldn’t move much today just because the storms were threatening and didn’t want to run too far. Hopefully I will get an evening trip in this week!

Over the past four years my go to was shallows. I fished submerged trees, trees laying over the water, and trees branches overhanging just giving an area shade. It produced very well for me. This year has been absolutely horrible and those areas are not producing as well as in the past. I am scratching my head and wondering why? I’ve fished multiple times in these areas weekly from the first week of May on. So I’m putting the time in. Don’t get me wrong I’m on fish like crazy this year but am wondering why the shallows have been so off for me. Any ideas? Is anyone else having problems catching them in normal spawning areas? FYI I didn’t have a single fish with eggs in them this week. Kept 40 for a fish fry this summer. I can tell you a few males still had some fertilizer but maybe 4-5.. are they spawned out?
Fished an hour and a half this evening through the pouring rain and then blue skies on the south end of pymatuning and ended up boating 17-20 crappie. A lot were smaller fish right around 9, but all of them were released. Ended up with a decent catfish, 4-5 perch, few sunfish and a few bonus largemouth. Most on plastics tipped with nibbles. Only had 1 bite and a bass off medium size minnows. Headed down next Wednesday and then again on the following Sunday, Monday. Going to try to locate some structure and pick them off. Any advice would be appreciated in regards to the structure fishing, am I thinking correctly? Should I keep my same tactics?
Keep the same strategy but look for new spots. Chances are, at this time of the year, you’re not the only one fishing the spots you’re on now. The fish don’t get time to bunch back up when the spot gets hit two or three times every day by different techniques. Use your electronics to find spots out of the ordinary places you see boats bunched up. Watch your finder as you move from one spot to your next in that area. Go on different trail lines, if you don’t erase them daily. Mark all the bottom changes on your gps as you go over them. Come back and take a closer look. I have at least fifty waypoints on the south end of Pymatuning. I fish the out of the way ones first. I’ve actually got limits off them in less than two hours some days. Find new spots, Mark them, and fish them hard.
On those days when I get quick limits, I go spot hunting. Pick an area and troll around keeping an eye on your locator. Might find them as shallow as five feet even now. Don’t hesitate to look shallow. Black crappies will stay somewhat shallow all season. Five to twelve foot.
