    Default A PA Question

Seeing how I have a lifetime license I may not make it to the NW PA Fish Commission office this spring. I usually ask my questions right to the horse's mouth but.........Do I read the summary laws right saying we can use up to 3 rods in open water fishing? It used to be 2 rods in open water fishing. Seems like it may be worthwhile to study up on some of that "spider rigging" technique our southern friends enjoy. Thanks

Go on the state website, to get the answers you want. Also, since a rules book isn't given with the license anymore, is another reason to check the site out. But you can pay extra to buy a rule book.

I believe they changed it to 3. I think the carp fisherman pushed that and got it for us.
But it’s ALWAYS best to check yourself!

    Requirements & Law
    Tackle & Equipment
RODS, LINES, AND HOOKS – An angler may use a maximum of three lines fished either by rod or hand when fishing for gamefish, baitfish or both. An exception to this rule exists for those fishing through ice in winter (see Ice Fishing Equipment below). On open water (not covered by ice), it is unlawful for a person to fish with more than three fishing rods at a time. There is no restriction on the number of hooks used on each fishing line. All rods, lines and hooks shall be under the immediate control of the person using them.

Because I live about 2 miles away I usually get my license at the NW headquarters. Most times I use that as an opportunity to voice my dislike of the fishing license display law and ask questions. Sometimes they give a copy of the "summary laws" free. Last year it cost wife and I over $100 for licenses so maybe "free" isn't the right word.

I also have a life time license. To show how old I am, it includes the trout stamp also for a life time. As far back as I can remember, it has always been 3 rods. It has only been a short while back that the number of hooks became unlimited, I believe they were 3 also. Just as a side note, in New Jersey fishing from a boat the rods are unlimited but fishing from shore you are limited to 3 rods. I would like to see the rod number increased to 4 in Pa. I spider rig and would be nice to fish 2 rods on each pole holder set up. Pop

118.90 >>>>>> I am NOT complaining. Went to a casino once. Slot machine sucked $20 bills out of my hand so fast it burned my finger tips. I have had more fun fishing in a cold rain than my only casino experience and that was at a fraction of the price.

It used to be you could only use two, and a hand line. About five years ago, it changed to three per person, but if using three, can't use a hand line along with it. I read somewhere, that this year, if you want to have a booklet, that you have to pay for it, as it isn't included. You would think, that for the seniors, they would at least give it to them for free.
