    Default When do you fish?

The weather has been a little strange in my area. We have had a tremendous amount of rain in the past year. Being a fly fishermen xtream conditions would get decent and then blown out for another week or so. This winter seems just as strange. We got a few measurable snow falls but then sleet and freezing rain. The forecast is for up to 7 inches of snow then sleet, freezing rain then turning to rain by tonight. Tomorrow they predict temp in the low 50s. My question is when do you fish. I try to hit the prespawn of crappie then go from there. I am sure many have favorite times with criteria of when to go. Perhaps some are willing to share there ideas?

The weather here on the western side of the state has been some what strange too this year. For the ice fishing people, don't think they have got to fish, as much as they would like to. As soon as the weather gets decent here, need to get the boat ready, then hope for reasonable weather to go. Pre spawn yes, but even sooner. When the ice comes off the lakes, all fish will be ratcheting up on filling their bellies.

When do I fish? Answer is Any time I get a chance. I love to ice fish and I love the spring time bite. I also love any other time I can get out after that. Weather plays a role in that but if it is not to extreme,I fish. If it's too hot,I fish in the morning or late evening, sometimes at night. If it's raining,I have a rain coat. Some guys won't fish with a east wind,I have had good days on a east wind. I love to fish so I do it when I can.

Any day I’m able to breath, I’ll fish. That’s every day I wake up. Really. Being retired I fish whenever I feel like it. I’ve been icefishing all month and having a good time most days. Next month, I’ll head south and enjoy some Kentucky weather for a few weeks then back home to our area lakes for our crappie spawn. July, I’ll head north to Lake Erie for the walleyes. I’ll fish them until they move out to deep water in August. Then I’ll go out with the friends with bigger boats made to fish the bigger waters all the way until mid September. Then it’s back to Shenango and Pymatuning until mid October. I may head back to Ky lake for a week then but if I don’t, I’ll spend the rest of the season on Shenango Lake. I’ll fish there until it’s time to put my boat away. Usually the second week of December. Then it’s a wait on the ice to form again.

Usually fish early spring until around July 1. I plan on fishing straight through this year until November so we shall see. Too many walleye in lake Erie again, so my second favorite bite (perch) won’t happen again this year. Can’t get into the trolling for walleye thing, I get bored after 1 trip.

Use different techniques to catch those Erie eyes. You can even drift and cast for them. I enjoy trolling for them using dipsys with either spoons or stickbaits but have used big boards small inline boards and even flatlined deep diver cranks on braid or wire to get them. I’ve had days when I’ve put 12 eyes in the cooler in an hour and a half and threw back ten more just killing time. If you find yourself getting bored, change the technique you’re using.

I put a few hours in yesterday doing some stream flyfishing. Only one fall fish. I was mainly looking for black stoneflys and or Bluewing Olives. Only a few black stones with no fish taking them. I was on Bigspring,Greenspring and the upper yellowbreeches. We have a tremendous amount of water everywhere. More snow and rain on the way will only keep stream levels very high even for this time of year. Looks like our spring will be bank and lake full of water. Perhaps better then low late season problems but not my cup of tea for fishing. I will be glad to see some dry 50- 60 deg. weather!
