    Default The Gauntlet

Went to small county park lake to fish for gills, redear and hybrids. I had been catching them shallow but nothing. Started fishing deeper and hooked one and as I'm bringing it in a nice bass grabs it and after a minute spits it out. Hook another and saw four bass chasing it but was too big for them I guess. Bass looked to be 2-4LBs. This went on all morning and around 11 I get hit again and this time I opened my bail and let it run for a bit before setting the hook and it's on. Told my daughter to get her camera out. Fought it for a couple minutes and then it jumps directly in front of my daughter and throws the hook. Asked, Did you get that!!!! No, she missed it. Really nice bass, probably 6lbs or more. Had five bass grab my gills and didn't get one in, but then again they always get away from me, hooks too small. Here are some who survived the gauntlet. Beautiful pans, and they’re a good size for any bass to take on!

Great lookin fish Jim. I’ve had that happen a couple of times with crappie with the same results. Good fun and it really makes the heart rate go up. Glad to see you got out and the weather didn’t raise its ugly head.

Having a bass hit a bream you’ve hooked is a heart pounding experience. In all my years of bream fishing I’ve only got two bass to the boat. I’m surprised at the size of other fish a bass will attempt to eat

Went to another lake yesterday and found some 7-9" gills out in deeper water since spawn hasn't started yet. Water at this lake is pretty clear and could see a really nice bass chilling until I hooked an hand size gill and she decided she was hungry and went to attack mode chasing and grabbing the gill sideways in her mouth. When I pulled the gill out of her mouth she attacked it again. This went on several times with her taking it off the top, amazing to watch, would have been a great video except I had left my phone in the truck. Bluegill stopped struggling and she lost interest. I unhooked the beat up male gill and he swam away. That was one tough gill. Hooked several more gills and she chased everyone of them. I horsed the others in because they were too big for her. Couldn't catch a small gill to give her something that would fit. Best day for big gills in a few years.
