You said nothing to offend me. I was merely rambling and was not referring to any one response. No skeetbum, we are good! The posters question just struck a nerve. We as fishermen share a passion that we hope to pass on. We also share a passion for being teachers and students. One of the things that I love most about this sport is the continual education received each time on the water. Maybe selfishly, but it grates my nerves when another angler is rude and does not share my consideration for my fellow anglers but that is a whole new subject. You need to come back to Tennessee and let me put you on some Cumberland River Smallies!

Expresses exactly the theme of the post!

It's not like shooting a deer seen in a scope at 70 yards. We can't see the fish we catch - especially on the long cast. Bass or any large fish species makes no difference - piecing together a pattern - even if just for part of a day - is! The challenge is to provoke the strike - any strike, see what hit and maybe why.

Gotta say though, ski boats and pleasure boaters are the worst when it comes to wakes. It's like they are the only ones on the water.

Was a tournament thing to me . Sideview will do the same thing just not as fast . Hats off to those that like it . Bought a boat that had a 93 Garmin and switched to a 1222 model . 5 months later the transducer or box went out . sold the 1222 and got off that money train . It will be a continuous money drain till you quit . Would not try to fish tournaments without one though . lol

I got into the tournament deal for a while also and eventually got to the point were it wasn’t fun anymore. My brother (an Ex tourney guy also) took me crappie fishing one day and it was FUN. I never looked back. I have one bass rod in the boat with a box of senko’s, the rest is ultra lite and my crappie rods. I am having fun again. By the way, I caught a 6 pound 14 ounce bass on a 1/64 with a bison trout magnet. The rod was a 6’ TFO trout/panfish. Now that was fun.

I’ll bet it was Etex.I’ve landed one that was five and a half and that took a minute. Hooked a catfish a few years back and figured out what it was pretty quick. Handed the rod to my son in law and watched him fight it for ten solid minutes before it came to the net. He still talks about it. It was on 4lb mono and scale said ten pounds and a couple of ounces. Pics, weigh and release. He still talks about it and hasn’t forgiven me for giving him the rod. His hands hurt when he was done.

As someone has said, we have so much to share and teach and it just feels good seeing the light come on. When they remember what you’ve said and applied it to be successful on a trip of their own is icing on the cake.

Isn't that the point of fishing for many of use: learn and help others enjoy the sport.
Plus in my case I'm fascinated by the mysteries and suprises that keep unfolding almost every time I fish.
Surprises like your catfish example in one of my replies. (Didn't even know what a white sucker was until I boated one and huge at that!)

Mystery: why would something so big bite something so small and so unlike anything they ever saw in their lifetimes?

Mystery: how many more exceptional lure designs will I discover that catch fish?

Today I fished in 42 degree water from shore, casting in a cove and caught one of each: crappie, bass, y.perch and a sunfish on a new lure design. Later, I saw a small school of sunfish in open water near the surface that wouldn't bite the same lure.

But interestingly enough, I saw about 5 sunfish looking up at me almost at my feet while I was standing on my dock. (Note: these fish come to me on a daily basis to feed on little balls of bread I throw to them at midday in summer.) The few sunnies that inspected my lure up close only nose-bumped it but wouldn't strike.
I went to the house and got a slice of bread and chucked in some bread balls which they attacked like in summer. Some even grabbed the balls on the surface as they splashed. And then a dozen more came from different directions for the bread snacks! Remember - 42 degree water!

Note: Since when have fish fed on bread balls - something they've never seen but instinctively know that STARCH IS GOOD?! Makes me wonder if they would have attacked the same hanging on a small hook. But that would have been too easy and unfair to boot! They're too much like pets.

Those things I discovered in my pond in one afternoon shared with you that would not have been witnessed going only after tournament fish in warmer water, like this clear plastic lure that caught the 4 different species.

that's what I say, Largemouth are way down on the list of fish that I like to go for. My grandfather was almost 102 when he passed, his favorite fish to go after, were buffalo.

One thing I forgot to mention was that, in general, smaller lures are used to catch more fish species and therefore more fish in general. The attack didn't make sense in that there's a great deal of proof that small lures catch big fish and have done so for centuries.

Jigcraft.com is a forum where jig tiers would show their hand-tied creations and the huge fish they caught on them. I introduced the small soft plastics I use on light jig heads and included photos of the large size range of fish I caught on various shapes and actions.

It's ignorance of the facts when someone ridicules one's choice of lures and makes assumptions regarding what is caught on them. Heck, I've caught sunnies on 5" plastic worms and 7 lb. catfish on 1.5" lures!!
