It was around 1988, I worked with a guy who fished, I don't know, Red Man Tournament or some such. Asked me, let's go this weekend and fish the tournament on Wylie. Nope, I have no interest in tournament fishing. Come'on, let's go fishing Saturday. Marty, I'll go fishing, but not a tournament. Why not? I respond, the pressure will It'll take the fun out of it, it's just not why I fish & don't want that. Okay, he says, we'll just go fishing.
Long story short, it was one of those epic days, topwater action on fire. Zara Spook, Devils Horse, Tiny Torpedo, didn't matter, they were on fire. We weighed a very nice "tournament limit" kept two good ones, filleted them and had a fish fry back home with cole slaw and fries, homemade cocktail sauce. He found out later our weighed "tournament limit" would have blown the winner of that tournament out of the water. Don't remember how much weight it was, but he said, DANG YOU, we should have entered the tournament. I said, would you have fished the same area with pressure on? Probably not. Would you have had as much fun as we did? No. Would you have enjoyed that nice bass fillet dinner we had? Definitely not. See, that's why I have no interest in tournament fishing.

*I have nothing against people who DO enjoy tournament fishing nor am I down on tournaments in general. They have gotten a bit out of control IMO and it seems some of those participating, particularly some of the pros, seem to think when they're on the water they have some type of carte blanche on the lake. I think that snobbery is the very thing the OP was observing and I believe that snobbery has indeed grown from what we've been talking about in general, and tournament fishing specifically.

The same reason some people always look down on someone else for whatever reason....ignorance!

I Bass fish all year long but I follow this forum 'cause I love to see them gills and crackers! I don't look down at nobody, and nobody needs to be lookin' down at me! The majority of anglers are members of a special society that loves the outdoors, loves conserving the outdoors, and loves our fellow anglers. I say the majority, but we all know there are exceptions. It's the 10% rule. 10% of any group are the ones that ruin everything for the 90% that live right!

I don't dislike tournament fishing, but I don't do it either. I was bank fishing a few ears ago, and was doing pretty good. A couple fellas came along in a souped-up boat and told me they were in a tournament, and had scouted that spot and they would take it over from their as I was able to fish anywhere on the bank. I proceeded to tell them I was where I was, I wasn't moving, and they could fish anywhere in the lake, most of which I couldn't from the bank. I hadn't caught nothing but crappie, no bass and wasn't bothering anyone. It took about 15 min. for them to realize I wasn't leaving, and they left.
As stated, it only takes one or two to ruin things for a whole group. Sorta put a bad taste in my mouth if you know what I mean.

Dont' get me wrong. When I tournament fished I didn't care about winning. The guys in the 3 b.a.s.s. affiliated clubs I fished with (yep three) didn't see themselves as pros and all were gentlemen out to have a good time. Cutthroat angling soured me especially when another club's members got too close to the spots we were fishing or left a large wake going past us for fishing their spots.

Winning for the sake of winning was not my thing - learning from any angler I fished with was, regardless experience level. I even gave lures to my t. partners to help them catch fish that I caught fish on. Winning isn't anything - catching fish IS! I live for the strike and fascination why fish strike certain lures and not others - as you've seen by my posted illustrations. Though a gotta say, there were a few in one club that took winning too serious and no one liked fishing with them.

Granted, SPOONMINNOW is a sissy name, but the fish don't care and neither should anyone else - especially when a.holes see my jon boat with trolling motor that I fish from in places big bass boats can't.
(BTW the name originated from making a minnow shape using the film from a spoon use to stir 300 degree plastic ready for pouring into a mold.)

Worked for a fella that had a brand new 20 something foot Bullet bass boat with a built Mercury outboard that would run into the 80's. Used the to catch bream fishing with crickets a float and a bream buster.

Bwilso, sorry if I said something to offend, that wasn’t my intention. I’ve stereotyped folks and included some of the good folks in doing so. It’s not the boats, I had a bass boat myself, and it’s not the tourneys either. It the 10% that have treated me as second rate for no reason that really rip my shorts. My apologies.

I had rather eat red ear over all fish , including crappie . I love crappie fishing and they are a close second to red ear as table fare . Fished 80 % of my life from a 14 ft . Jon boat .(including the big four)I do chase the bass every once in a while . I wore out more 202 reels than most in Mississippi . lol We only fished when it was raining or to bad to work in the fields or dark . Might get in a trip when caught up or nothing broken down . Where I come from I fish from a Cadillac . lol I see idiots with all size pocket books that sell four wheelers to buy boats and flip at the beginning of hunting season . Ignorance has no boundaries so enjoy what the
Lord has given us and do not dwell on negative folks . They Probably would make lousy fishing partners anyways . I may be the only person on this site that had a 12 inch livescope and sold it as it was not my thing . Hope "I" always have the right to choose what "I" like . Be kind to all and fish on !

Eagle, I know that live scope and others like it are the hot new thing but I don’t have any interest in it. Figuring them out is part of the fun for me.
