    Default I’m a lucky man

Had doctors mid day yesterday and finished with some time on my hands. The temps were in the 80’s and the skies mostly clear with low wind. I couldn’t think of anything else so I hooked up and brought the small rods. No crappie but one this trip and he was late in the day and about 9” on a very small rapala I was throwing for the surface activity that was driving me nuts. He was the only taker on that. The blue ice IBSS I had on got torn and I replaced it with a double silver rainbow. Just over two hours on the water and the mosquitoes drove me off, they were bad. Lizards were sunning, I saw a few from about 2’ long.I’m guessing that the redbreast sunfish are starting to bed as they were the lions share of what I caught. They never get real big but they all sport a large attitude and are fun to catch. The Warmouth in the pic had me thinking he was a largemouth by his stubborn fight. I didn’t count but I’m sure I caught twenty, maybe more. There’s a tree littered pocket about 50’ across that had some surface activity going on like maybe small bass chasing fry or Shad. I kept pitching in there and all I got was Redbreast and one bluegill. Even if I can’t get em to bite often enough, I love watching the surface swirling and splashing. It makes my heart rate go up along with the excitement level. A great afternoon that I enjoyed while taking none home. Enjoy the pics and holler if you see me out. Til then……..Skeet.

Based on the background scenery Skeet we could be fishing the same place, which of coarse we arent.
My thing is single poling with jigs along those weed edges for Crappies.
I also keep a rigged 12’ telescopic rod handy for reaching out to some of the holes in the weeds.
I usually have an 8’ rod in a holder on the opposite side pretty much straight down, which is usually about 4’.
I also will often have a shorter rod with a float trailing behind maybe 20’ or so.
As a rule i will catch a nice blugill on pretty much every trip, and occasionally a warmouth as well.
I also get quite a few of the tap tap hits as opposed to the crappie thump.
Im thinking that i should forget crappies for a trip, and use a worm on a hook or a small jig and just see what happens.
At least on the rod im holding in my hand.
As for the surface action, im always watching for that, as im not much into using electronics.
Also i believe birds on the grass beds are an indicator as well. Numerous birds often means lots of bait being chased from below the grass.
But no doubt some of the surface activity is caused by Tilapia as well, and that can be a bit misleading.

Yobuck, I leave the house with5 rods usually, but seldom touch more than two. I’ve tried rods out the other side and out back but I don’t remember them. I’ll go pulling in to get a jig loose and here’s the other rods I. The tree or hung up on a tree underwater and doubled over. I’ve gotta be smarter than what I’m working with, and clearly I’m not. So many downed trees and I’m in close most of the time. It was a good time but the bigger fish weren’t working yesterday. I dont want to go home when they are. My daughter Jessie and I got a two hour trip one Friday after work and caught 15 bluegill over 8” and 10 shellcrackers up to my pb af 13 and a quarter. Never before or since, but the smile is just as big I’m sure. Hope to see you out sometime.

That water looks very nice when the water around here is a little harder on the surface.
