Japanese Tanago fishing involves using tiny hook to catch bitterlings, known as Tanago, with red worms or flour based gluten bait. LV, you might look into Sabiki rigs. Used for catching bait they have multiple tiny hooks with a touch of color on each and they’re inexpensive. Looks about like what you were using.
I caught a couple of baby redears this morning while chasing micros gills .
Pretty little redbreast too .
Got to catch a few little jewels myself this morning.

Skeet, I've used Sabiki rig before long ago for catching live baits for my surf excursions. It certainly would work with baby gills, but now I'm mostly 1-hook kind of fisherman.
