The reel is (or was) a 1978 ABU 1500C. Cleaned up and some polishing of the correct areas and it could throw 1/8 oz stuff pretty nicely. I've done quite a few mods to it. It can now throw 1/32 oz lures. Mind you, no long bomb casts with the 1/32 oz stuff, but the flight is straight and there is no pulling. I have it on a rod made for trout stream fishing, so it wasn't designed for long casts anyway. The end of the rod is tiny but it still handled the bass nicely.

If I ever get to PA at the right time of year, I might actually use it for stream trout action. For now, it's a fun XUL rig for panfish.
Ffw, awesome catches and beautiful baitcasting combo! I have a somewhat love hate relationship with baitcasting reels as well, especially the round one. They are just beautiful to look at and use, but I can only manage my casting weight down to 1/4 oz…..hardly considered finesse, lol.

Ffw, I have a Shimano Conquest bought couple years ago to get into finesse bass fishing and an old Abu morrum 1600c ( love the size) I used to cast a weight-N-bait rig into the SoCal surf or Lake Mead for striped bass…..

Nice rigs. Love that Morrum! I have a Black Max 1600. Unfortunately, no one makes a light weight spool for these. Drooling over some 1600 Morrums on eBay but haven't pulled the trigger on one yet. Wouldn't mind a Calcutta 50 but those are hard to find, at least at the price I want to pay!

Ffw, Shimano Calcutta 50 were some workhorse of a reel and still is if found in excellent condition can hold close to its retail value. Unfortunately by time i had the urge to tangle with some lighter stuff, they were all but discontinued so i ended up with the replacement Conquest BFS, still expensive but I figured it'd last me forever base on how much i get to take it out. As for the shallow spool for the Abu round reels, I don't think there are any but there are handful of Japanese Abu enthusiasts in Japan who will go the distance to get one custom made ( read: Expensive.) Check out Youtube video by a Vloger: Enjoy Fishing Channel! This angler regularly shown visiting various high-end "trout" specific custom tackle shop and all these high-end gears can be seen, like your Ambassadeur 1500c & 2500c in custom restored condition with many different colors. I consider the gent to be well heeled if you know what i mean and one of the world's best baitcasters at that.

That’s a great looking rig. Yet another rabbit hole I don’t dare get close to. Glad to see y’all having a large time with them though.

There are shallow spools for the 1500 and 2500 for sure. I have them. They are light - just under 6 grams! Just put one on the 1500 a few weeks ago. This change made it possible to cast 1/32 oz lures. I had already upgraded the line guide, pawl, worm gear and worm drive cog wheel with lighter items and bearings in the appropriate places. It's most certainly is a rabbit hole!

And there are light/shallow spools available for the Conquest too. ;-)
