Thread: Review of Varivas Ajing Master Blue Moon Fluorocarbon.

Am finally able to get back to fishing after getting my new knee. I have been wanting to test out the new Varivas Blue Moon FC line. I have had it spooled on the reel for over 2 weeks. While waiting for the doc to release me to start fishing again I was in the backyard casting with the line and doing lots of line breakage test and knot strength tests using the Bouz Drag checker...which is a pretty accurate device. First let me say just how manageable this line is. It lays on the spool extremely well....casting a 1 gram jig head is effortless and while I did not measure out the feet in distance it casts a long way. This is the thinnest FC line I have ever used...at .117mm diameter with a breaking strength rating of 2 pounds. After doing dozens of break tests this line was breaking at 2.3 pounds. Knot strength is excellent. I use a Palomar knot and the knot tests all broke at 2 pounds. Was itching to get this line on the water just to see how it compared to my ester line that I have used for years. When fishing in deep water I want a line that will sink so I can get a 1 gram jig down and using a slow retrieve keep it deep as much as possible. I want a line that is sensitive...FC line is certainly that. My wife drove me the 90 miles to VFW Lake while I reclined and kept ice packs on the knee. I could not fish very long.....my knee is doing fantastic but I do not want to rush back to my normal routine too quick and have issues. In an hour I landed several crappie at the 10-11 inch mark...a few small shell cracker...and a cat that went about 2 pounds....really testing the line as it made several runs. I was using the Eradicator Slow Taper Special....Daiwa Presso Limited 1025 reel and had a Sow Bug colored Trout Magnet on a Daiwa Gekkabijin 1 gram jig head with a #8 hook. I will be using this line quite often....I am very impressed with this line. I do not see any drawbacks with this line. The only drawback is with my eyes. This line is hard to see for an aging man....but the blue color does make it visible. It has advantages over ester line.....no shock leader is required and for those that use ester you know the manageability problems ester has. The Blue Moon has none of those issues. If you are a true UL angler who likes very light lines and you want a sinking.....super sensitive line, I highly suggest this line. Next week it is going to get a good workout below Nickajack if they slow the water down.

I've only used 2 brand of fluorocarbon lines up until now and it's been Seaguar and the recent PLine from Japan and both are 8lb thickness for surf casting and pier rods pulling in anything from 12lb leopard shark to 2lb yellowfin croakers. They are still on those 3000 size reels though hardly put to actions any more, but can't say I've experienced any kind of negative issues using them. I bought them for their abrasion resistance and lack of stretch....good for hook set. Unfortunately not many manufacturer are making the thinner 2lb line fluorocarbon in the US, again mainly because anglers here are not too obsessive about their UL gears, if they do most sporting stores do not carry them. My closest to full fluorocarbon 2lb is a PLine 2lb Floroclear....a fluorocarbon-coated line, but I have no complaint due to it's low stretch property alone. However its abrasion resistance property has yet to be tested until I can get to SoCal pier and do a little UL multi-specie angling...Lol.
