    Default Bluegill Spawn

    Hey guys,

As we all probably know bluegill will spawn from late April-August (depending on what of the country you are in). I went to a new lake around the full moon last week to fish for some bedding bream. I usually don’t fish this late in summer because of the heat but it was a nice overcast day so the heat wasn’t as bad. I did pretty good catching bream on beds but I couldn’t help but notice that most of the fish were in the 6.5-7.5 inch range. Those are still decent bluegill but not the 8 inch plus I’m use to catching. From your experience, do smaller males spawn later in the summer? I know smaller male crappie usually spawn after the larger males or get less favorable spawning spots. The 6.5-7.5 inchers I was catching could very well be the largest they get in that lake but any insight would be appreciated.

100% in my expierance MOST of the bigger panfish be they crappie or panfish , the largest spawn 1st and average size goes down with each spawn. Here in Ga. biggest crappie in Feb. or March depending on water temp and 1st round of shellcrackers around full moon in April. Scott

That’s what I was thinking. I’m always able to tell when the crappie spawn is almost over when I start catching a bunch of small males and I was thinking maybe bream are the same way.

tends to be that way here as well , once the smaller fish show up there seems to be lots less quality sized fish in the area
