Thread: Current Fishing Magazines

This thread has really gotten off topic. I apologize for my part in that.

Problem with most of the magazines is that they eventually run out of things to talk about.
If you subscribe long enough you will be rereading recycled information.
In the early 70s my wife bought me a portable Lowrance green box fish finder.
Actually they were simply a flasher type depth finder as all of them were in that era.
But while sitting in a barber shop waiting my turn i picked up an outdoor magazine the name of which i dont recall.
But there was a regular monthly artice in it called ( Starns at large )
And this particular month his article was about an experience he supposedly had on a fishing trip.
He referred to a group of fisherman he referred to as ( jasbos ) who had located a school of fish with with a unit like i had and in his words aniliated them.
He went on to say that if regulations werent placed into affect banning the use of these devices every fish that swam would be eliminated.
He had obviously never used one of those units or he would have known better.
I wrote a letter to him care of the magazine and left him know my opinion.
The real problem is that Starns is an idiot, and he is at large.
He never answered my letter. lol

No telling how many of those units . He suggestively sold those units as the ultimate edge that will put you on the fish. Make me think I need it without telling me I need it.

Can't forget Fishing with Virgil Ward and his tank showing the baits they used and how they worked them. Doug Stange, editor of In Fisherman is a great story teller. Been a subscriber since the 80's and keep every copy. Have hundreds of In Fisherman mags stored in cases in the basement. Only mag I subscribe too. There are a ton of adds in every magazine but I don't have to read them, just turn the page. Back in the 80's I taped every In Fisherman show on VHS and still have the tapes even though I don't have a VCR anymore.

The storytellers, that was the ticket. I’ve spent a lot of my life reading different things. As a road driver, I disliked TV of my own in the truck. Interference from radios, poor signal, and rip-off cable connections just made me nuts so I took it out one trip and never put it back. So I gathered books from secondhand stores for cheap and brought outdoor mags that I could find. The better ones made you forget that you were parked in a truck stop far from home. When I post about a recent trip, I’m sure I’m rewriting a story that I’ve read out of one of so many publications without knowing it. Florida Sportsman Magazine still has some good content and good writers. Their focus on conservation and proper treatment of our resources make it an easy read for me. Charles Waterman wrote for several publications around Florida and maybe the country, and he was one of those I enjoyed. It’s hard to compare a kid in a canoe with a cheap rod and reel to a pro in a bass boat or saltwater skiff, but these guys could bridge that gap and make you feel like you were one of their equals. I wonder how many of us turned a corner in our learning curves after reading a piece from one of these greats, now passed.
