Strange thing to me. When I'm just jigging for crappie under the boat or casting and retrieving jigs I'm not sure I know when to set the hook. Bite is awfully soft! Makes me wonder how many I miss that I don't feel? I like my slip bobber, no doubt when it goes under!

That’s a pretty Gill and good sized too. Love the finesse bite. I feel so many more now with the tiny braid that I now think mono bites are kinda mushy. There have been many times that I’ve seen more bites than felt. A line that suddenly goes still or wiggles wrong, or a float that just does something it shouldn’t. The bites on the rise are the best when we figure em out.

The braid sure helps me feel the soft bites. A lot of times I will have shot in btween the tubes on a toon the line will be in contact with the boat due to small space to keep the rod in contact with the jig as it falls. You can feel a bite, or the sudden loss of contact with the jig.

When I am jigging for crappie I quite often watch for a bite more than try to feel a bite ,especially during the summer months .
But when the bluegill start biting that light you know it’s a really soft bite .

a crappie Jedi will in fact ketch fish when they are not even biting , been there and done that a few times
It makes me smile when folks that are watching say , you didn't even get a bite and you set the hook !
one fella in particular was watching me in the shade one summer day drinking beer and just observing .
he kept saying "that just beats all " you are ketchn them even when they are not biting ...
I said no sir they are biting and biting well you just don't see and feel , what I see and feel .

to be sure lots of folks think when I set the hook and come up empty I am just playing around , not so to be sure and if I set the hook ,it is highly likely that it was a bite and that is a fact ,hooksets might be free but to be sure as heck I don't waste them very often
we have a saying , if ANYTHING isn't normal, set the hook , it is for sure a crappie playing hard to get
we also say imagine how many bites that fella got that said they are not biting and went home with an empty livewell . some days when we top 150 to 200 fish we hear folks say they are not biting today and we always leave chuckling going ok sure ...whatever you say
