    Default ID This Fish

Threw a Rebel Crickhopper for the first time this evening. I was fishing it topwater style and this little guy nailed it. I think it's a green sunfish, but I'e never caught one of these before, so I'm not sure. Lay some knowledge on me!

There are so many subtle variations with both species and each individual fish that it’s hard to determine at times.Sent from my iPhone using Crappie.com

It has red eyes on my screen, not sure if that is showing up on everyone else's devices. Really dark red eyes, no blue on cheeks, no red or orange on fins, no blue specks down the sides, and no white outlining of the black gillplate flapper.. Definitely not a green sunfish and looks everything like a warmouth. Really cool fish, even with the paleness in this particular fish.

It is a warmouth (Lepomis gulosus). Which common name is Goggle Eye, but several people also call the green sunfish a goggle eye so that is where all the confusion lies and why we cannot use common names to ID fish usually.

Congrats on the fish, they arent everywhere and are on the bucket list for many people.

They both cool looking fishes! Especially your catch, Smitty, with the red around the fins.

The Warmouth around here have 3 stripes on their Gill plates . Like has already been said there are subtle variations and no doubt a regional difference too maybe. Looks like he was fun regardless. If he’s a hybrid he’ll be tough to call.

I think the old timers hollered Goggle Eye on anything that was not a Bluegill or a cracker. Wither way looks like it was a scrappy fighter
